OUR PROCESS

PLANNED
AROUND THE WATER.

01 / PLAN

Riprap is one of the most reliable erosion control methods available because it’s built to be repaired rather than replaced. Individual stones can be reset or added to as conditions change, which makes it a practical long-term option for municipalities managing shoreline maintenance over time. Coastal Marine Construction sizes and places riprap according to the specific wave energy and soil conditions at each site, rather than using a generic stone size regardless of exposure.

02 / BUILD

Our process begins with a site evaluation to determine the appropriate stone size, gradation, and placement depth needed to hold up against the site’s wave and current conditions. We prepare the base, often with a filter layer or geotextile fabric to prevent soil migration underneath the stone, then place and grade the riprap to the engineered slope. Throughout installation, we monitor for any site conditions that differ from the original assessment and adjust placement accordingly, working with project engineers when changes are needed.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Riprap is rock or stone material placed along shorelines, embankments, and structures to prevent erosion from waves, currents, and runoff.

Riprap is a type of material and placement method often used within a revetment system. Revetment is the broader engineered structure, which may use riprap, concrete, or other materials depending on the site.

Stone size depends on the site’s wave energy and current exposure. Coastal Marine Construction determines the correct gradation and size during the site assessment phase.

Riprap is a long-term solution that can be maintained and repaired over time rather than requiring full replacement, making it a practical option for ongoing shoreline protection.

Most riprap installations include a filter layer or geotextile fabric beneath the stone to prevent the underlying soil from washing out over time.

Riprap is commonly used along seawalls, bridge abutments, culverts, and open shorelines where erosion from waves or currents is an ongoing concern.
